INDICATIONS:

Amebiasis, extraintestinal

SIDE EFFECTS:

ADULT DOSE:

Malaria (suppressive treatment)-Oral, 500 mg (300 mg base) once every seven days . Malaria (treatment)-Oral, 1 gram (600 mg base) initially, followed by 500 mg (300 mg base) in six to eight hours, and 500 mg (300 mg base) once a day on the second and third days . Liver abscess, amebic (treatment)-In combination with other "tissue-acting" antiprotozoals: Oral, 250 mg (150 mg base) four times a day for two days, followed by 250 mg (150 mg base) two times a day for at least two to three weeks . Note: The dosage schedule may be revised up or down, if necessary, or the course of therapy may be repeated . [Antirheumatic (disease-modifying)] -Oral, up to 4 mg (2.4 mg base) per kg of lean body weight daily . [Lupus erythematosus (suppression)] -Oral, up to 4 mg (2.4 mg base) per kg of lean body weight daily . [Polymorphous light eruption (suppression)] -Oral, 250 mg (150 mg base) two times a day for two weeks; then 250 mg (150 mg base) once a day .

 

MAXIMUM ADULT DOSE:

 

PEDIATRIC DOSE:

Malaria (suppressive treatment)-Oral, 8.3 mg (5 mg base) per kg of body weight, not to exceed the adult dose, once every seven days . Malaria (treatment)-Oral, 41.7 mg (25 mg base) per kg of body weight administered over a period of three days as follows: 16.7 mg (10 mg base) per kg of body weight, not to exceed a single dose of 1 gram (600 mg base); then 8.3 mg (5 mg base) per kg of body weight, not to exceed a single dose of 500 mg (300 mg base), six, twenty-four, and forty-eight hours after the first dose . Liver abscess, amebic (treatment)-Oral, 10 mg (6 mg base) per kg of body weight (up to a maximum of 500 mg [300 mg base]) per day for three weeks . Note: Children are especially sensitive to the effects of chloroquine .
